About this object

A wood and tin travelling trunk.

This trunk was used by Mary Ann Francis Wade and her parents, Achillas Bedford Wade and Nancy Wade nee Davidson, when travelling across America in the 1850's, in a covered wagon.
Ada May Wintle nee Elvy, grand-daughter of Mary Ann Francis Mitchell nee Wade, brought it to New Zealand when she married Louis Wintle, of Tara, Mangawhai.

The Mangawhai Museum has the personal reminiscences (42 pages) of Mary Ann Francis Mitchell nee Wade in the Archive Collection relating to the family's journey across USA to take part in the gold rushes of the times. Circa 1849 to 1870's. eHive Number 18-46.
