Samuel George Browne, known as George b 1875 d 1922, is standing beside the kauri log wagon. The tractor engine, named as "Wild Cat" was owned by George and his business partner Jonas Travers Smyth. They owned two steam traction engines, each with 3 wagons.
The Browne family lived in the Te Hana area. George served the Main Body 1st Mounted Division in WW1 in Egypt, and was invalided home in 1917 after several malaria attacks.
George died in 1922 after a logging accident in a flooded river near Whakapara where he owned a sawmill and a contracting business.
This photograph is included in a large collection of Browne Family memorabilia, donated to Mangawhai Museum by Esma Torckler, nee Browne. Items include family trees, certificates, letters, memoirs, photographs, newpaper cuttings and emails.
