This kauri tree was growing on the Balderston Family Farm "Pukenui", Pukenui Road, Kaiwaka. It was struck by lightning in 1987 and died. John Lawrence Balderston, known as Lawrie owned the farm at that time. It was 30 metres tall and had a girth of 8.5 metres. Estimated to be 800-1000 years old. It was felled in 1991 by Lane & Son Ld. The loggers were Steven Lane and Chris Bergman.
Lawrie Balderston gifted a full cross section of the tree to Otamatea Kauri and Pioneer Museum and timber for restoration at Pompallier House, Russell.
