Harold Benjamin Browne's, known as HB, bullocks ready to be yoked at Sterlings Reserve, Matakohe.
One man could command a team of 16 or more bullocks. Bullocks learned their own name names and understood simple repeated commands. HB could call his leaders, each by name and they would walk into place, the next pair the same and he could have a team of 16 bullocks standing in place ready to be yoked up.
This photograph was included in a large collection of Browne Family memorabilia, donated to Mangawhai Museum by Esma Torckler, nee Browne. Items include family trees, certificates, letters, memoirs, photographs, newpaper cuttings and emails.
