About this object

A: Edward Fransham Browne with bullock team hauling a load of sawn timber from Cashmore's mill at back of Tara, Mangawai c.1924.
At Mangawai timber was off-loaded and stacked on the river bank until there was enough for a scow load. A hand tramway was used for loading the scow which delivered the timber to Auckland.

This photo was taken at the original Mangawai landing on the south side of the wharf at Mangawai Hotel before the wharf was built. The timber was off-loaded and stacked on the river bank until there was enough for a scow load. A hand tramway was used for loading the scow which delivered the timber to Auckland.

C: Edward Fransham Browne with bullock team hauling a log to Ross's Mill, while it was being built at back of Tara, Mangawai c.1921.
This later became Cashmore's Mill. Logs were sawn and used for construction. Ross's Mill consisted of a vertical breakdown, a travelling circular bench, a breast bench and a steam-driven log hauler.

These photographs were included in a large collection of Browne Family memorabilia, donated to Mangawhai Museum by Esma Torckler, nee Browne. Items include family trees, certificates, letters, memoirs, photographs, newpaper cuttings and emails.
