About this object

Trypot; a whaler's trypot, used to remove and render the oil from whale blubber. The large pot is made of iron, and features two flattened sides which enabled trypots to be placed closer together, and even bolted together in an effort to save room and heat.

This pot was used at the Tautuku Whaling Station, active between 1839 and 1843.
