About this object

Scale model; a small-scale model of the ship Surat, thought to have been made on winter evenings by a construction worker on the Catlins Railway in 1910.

The 'Surat' ran aground in a sinking condition, in Catlins Bay (now Surat Bay), on the 1st of January, 1874. No lives were lost, but the passengers lost many of their personal possessions. A later marine inquiry found the Captain and First Officer to be at fault for the wreck.
