About this object

Scale model; a small-scale model of the ship 'Surat', made by Robin Watkins.

The 'Surat' ran aground in a sinking condition, in Catlins Bay (now Surat Bay), on the 1st of January, 1874. No lives were lost, but the passengers lost many of their personal possessions. A later marine inquiry found the Captain and First Officer to be at fault for the wreck.
