About this object
Scale model; a small-scale, construction model for the ketch 'Anna', made by local shipwright William McPhee, in 1875. The carved, wooden model was made and then dismantled to provide measurements needed to construct the hull of the ship.
William McPhee (1839-1914) emigrated from Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the sawmilling industry attracted him to the Catlins. His home faced the Owaka River from a site near an area known as the Bluegums, not far from the Landing. From 1868 until 1876 he built a number of cutters, kethces and schooners on his slipway, and earned a reputation as a craftsman who created fine ships. [From 'Catlins Pioneering', A R Tyrell]
