Fragment, wood [S.S. Kotare]
About this object
Wood fragment; a large piece of wooden planking, with an iron rod embedded at one end. The wood shows evidence of having been underwater for some time.
The plank is recorded as being from the S.S. Kotare. This wooden steamer was the last vessel to make regular voyages between Dunedin, the Catlins River, Waikawa and Invercargill, hauling timber from the sawmills in a losing battle with the railway. The Kotare made its final journey to the Catlins River in 1920.
