About this object

Miner's hat; a coal miner's hard hat, thought to have been used by Mr James Hurring, at the Kaitangata Mine in the 1880s.
The black, leather-board hat features a leather and canvas straps inside, an extra layer of leather board over the top and a fitting at the front, on which a small oil lamp is fixed.
