About this object

Butter churn; an 'Ideal' brand butter churn, made in Auckland, New Zealand by Henderson & Pollard Ltd. Made from white pine (kahikatea). The churn consists of a barrel-shaped body with an external turning handle which rotates internal wooden paddles. There is a removable wooden lid at the top opening and a bung at the base of the barrel for releasing fluids.

In 1904 Henderson & Pollard established a joinery factory in Enfield Road. The factory was rebuilt twice after destructive fires in 1909 and 1927.
