About this object

Spinning wheel; the three-legged base and wool winder of a wooden spinning wheel. All pieces are varnished.

This spinning wheel belonged to Mrs Martha Logan, wife of Glasgow Logan, who was part of the survey gang that surveyed Owake (as it was then known). They brought the wheel with them from Ulster when the emigrated to New Zealand on the ship "Robert Henderson" in 1870. The Logan's became pioneers of Owake Flat and their descendant John Logan founded the Owaka Museum.
