About this object
Zither and case; this zither is said to have come from the County of Tyrol (now part of Italy and Austria), about 1828. It was played by M J Laughton at the Big Mill at Hinahina on the Catlins River.
The zither has 28 strings, 31 tuning pegs and pearl shell decoration on the soundbox. The case is of painted wood, lined with felt and wallpaper.
