About this object

Butter papers; a collection of the three types of butter papers used by the Owaka Co-Operative Dairy Co Ltd. The papers are fro Canoe brand butter and are printed in red and blue.

Dairy farming seemed at first the only possible way of making a profit out of farming. Cream was made into butter on individual farms. Then in the 1890s, small milk skimming or butter and cheese factories were founded.

On 1st January 1923, the Owaka Co-Operative Dairy opened. It was a modern factory that served a wider area. The factory began receiving cream and producing pure cream butter marketed with its distinctive label.
