About this object

Map of the Settlement of Otago, New Zealand, 1847, from Molyneux Bay to Tairoa Head.

This beautiful old map, adhered to a blue cotton fabric backing, shows surveyed sections in fine detail with the water ways delicately hand-coloured in blue watercolour.

The mouth of the Clutha River at Port Molyneux is shown with the spit which sheltered a deep-water port around which the thriving town of Port Molyneux grew. The harbour and township were destroyed in the devastating floods of 1878 when the spit was breached by the flood waters, creating a new channel and leaving the harbour drained.
