About this object

Bottle; a pale green glass bottle, moulded in two halves. The neck is pinched with a glass marble inside. Embossed around the body: "Thomson & Co, Crystal Springs, Mineral Water Works, Dunedin, Trade Mark, Purity, Registered".

This kind of bottle was invented specifically for carbonated drinks. It was designed to enclose a marble and rubber washer in the neck, the bottles were filled upside down and the pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The neck was pinched, to provide a chamber into which the marble was pushed to open the bottle.
