Off to School
About this objectChildren walked or rode to school on horseback, rowed across the estuary, came by ferry, ran across bull paddocks, hitched rides on the cream truck, and eventually came on school buses. Bare feet proved the easiest for negotiating the very muddy roads. In this picture, 10 children, in clean crisp whites and big boat hats are ferried across the water by the old boatman, in time for another day at school.
