Subject and Association Description

Chief Te Awaitaia was born at Waipa about 1796. His parents were Te Kata and Parehina, both rangatira of Ngati Mahanga iwi. He was active in battle throughout his early life, taking part in various expeditions lead by his kinsman Potatau Te Wherowhero.
