Name/Title

Early Settlers at the Royal Hotel 1890-95

About this object

The Royal Hotel was built and run by Joseph Graham in the late 1850's. In the early days the waterfront was Raglan's business and community centre. It was a popular haunt for locals, and for the militia stationed in Raglan during the Waikato Wars. The hotel burnt down about 1900 and a second Royal Hotel was built. This also burnt down in 1930 but was not replaced.

James William Graham is identified as the man at the back pouring himself a drink. Alfred Francis Graham is thought to be the man holding the large dog at front right
