About this object

Black/dark blue velvet jacket c.1870's. Round neck bound by black velvet. Front opening closed with five metal hooks and cotton and metal eyes. Fitted plain sleeves open at cuff and decorated with two lines of what was once black velvet piping, which since has worn back and turned blue. Bodice tailored and lined with black taffeta. Front is fastened for only 33cm of the 63.5cm length. Curved hem finished with black torchon type bobbin lace. Different velvet is at a gusset at underarm. Back of jacket has shoulder seams to waistband for fit and gathered bustle like 'tails', finished with the same lace. To be worn over a bustle skirt. completely hand sewn.
