He served in WW1 with the 8th Reinforcements, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion, G Company. Ian was killed in action at Somme, 5th April 1918. 2. Group of soldiers in England, dressed in Rugby uniforms etc… 13/178 Tpr. Thomas Davies Smellie Donaldson is back row, 2nd from right. 3. Group of soldiers at Featherstone Military camp from the same unit as 25688 Rfm. Ian Douglas Donaldson who is in the back row 5th from the left. 4. Group of Mounted Rifle soldiers in Egypt, 13/178 Tpr. Thomas Davies Smellie Donaldson is in front row, 3rd from left. 5. Palestine Rugby Championship team. They went to England.
