Major ARIELL, John Butterill
About this objectPhotograph of Major John Butterill Ariell on his horse c.1910-1914. J.B. Ariell was a captain in the North Auckland Mounted Rifles and lived in Paparoa. He was turned down by the NZ government in WW1 to serve in the war because of his age (60). He paid his own way to England where he was accepted by the 2nd Surrey Regiment also known as the Queen's Own.
