About this object

Two landscape drawings owned by 13/148 Lt.Col. James Neil McCarroll who brought them home from the desert in WW1. 1. A pencil sketch of 'Magdhaba' by A.H. Watson from a sketch by W. Otho Heniti in 15.9.13. On the back is written 'Lt. Col. J.N. McCarroll'. 2. A sketch of 'Ayun Kara' taken from Turkish position. Hand written on the back, 'Lt. Col. J.N. McCarroll'. These two places were the sites of major battles during WW1, in which the Auckland Mounted Rifles were involved, which was Lt. Col McCarroll's regiment. Later the mounted rifles held horse racing meets in these areas.
