Timber plaque holding a set of medals awarded to 281087 Pte. J.C. Ball who served in the Middle East during WW2. He was invalided out of the military after receiving a severe shrapnel wound. 1. The 1939-1945 Star, a six-pointed star with a GRI/VI monogram in centre, a Royal crown at top. The ribbon has three stripes of dark blue, red and light blue. 2. The Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp, this is identical to the 1939-1945 star but has 'The Africa Star' inscribed instead. The ribbon has two buff coloured stripes either side of a red stripe. Inside the buff stripes are thin dark blue stripe on the left and a thin light blue stripe on the right. 3. The Defence Medal. Silver circle with the head of King George VI on the front and 'The Defence Medal 1939-1945' around a coat of arms on the back. The ribbon is green either side of a red stripe, with thin black stripes inside each green stripe. 4. The War Medal, with the head of King George VI on front and a Lion crushing its enemies 1939-1945 on the back. The ribbon is red, blue, white either side of a red stripe. 5. New Zealand War Service Medal. King George VI on front with a silver fern and 'For Service to New Zealand 1939-1945' on the back. Black ribbon with white edges.
