About this object

Black silk cape c.late 19th century. Fully lined with black silk. Decorated with cut-out work with felt backing. Cut-outs are lined with braid and are a repeating geometric leaf pattern. Stand-up collar with round edge and stiffening material. A gathered frill of black silk trims the hem with a black net machine lace at outer edge. Front closes with two metal hooks and eyes. And a wide ribbon to tie at neck.(odd shapes). This cape is thought to have been Elizabeth Healey's who immigrated to New Zealand with her husband William on the ship "Jumna".
