About this object

Ladies cape or mantle c.1860. This was brought back from England by the donor. It had belonged to one of his relatives. It had never been worn in N.Z.. Label at neck, reads 'Low & Son's Dress & Mantle Maker's' and at bottom has town, ending in '…ham'. Black gabardine fabric with taffeta lining, satin ribbon, cotton net, pleated silk organza and applique floral designs decorate the bottom half and hems of the cape. The neck and hems, have pleated silk organza frill. Bottom hem has a double frill with net underneath.
