About this object

Cream rough silk dress with white lace inserts and black details, c.1900. Blouse has a high lace neck with black binding, lace inserts with black bias binding decorate at elbows, and two vertical stripes on bodice and a horizontal band on skirt. Envelope type decorations are at front blouse and back skirt close on waistband with black covered button details. Black bias binding at turn back cuffs, waistband and neck. At one time it was possibly a separate blouse and skirt, but it has been altered to become one dress. Open down centre back, closed with brass hooks, and cotton eyes at blouse with two dome buttons at skirt. This dress belonged to Marion Cullen née Dunn (1868-1922) grandmother of donor who married Thomas Cullen. Donor remembers his father Arnold Cullen(1899-1991) wearing it for 'dress up' entertainment.
