Christening gown.
About this objectMade by Mrs E.M. Hamerton (grandmother of donor) for a family, as she sewed for income. The family returned the gown after the family no longer wanted it. Mrs Hamerton was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts. White cotton with diagonal V inserts of machine lace, broderie anglaise and pin tucks. Bottom hem has many rows of pin tucks and lace, with scalloped lace at edge. lace frills at neck and sleeve cuffs, sleeves puffed with a lace inset and gathered at shoulder and wrist. Tied at back neck with drawstring and cuffs with drawstring.
