About this object

A satirical surrealist illustration featuring a caricature of a local government politician (with a turkey-like neck), accompanied by a hen/rooster, studying a decorative bird cage containing a native bush-like environment, which is placed on a table inside a room. It is a commentary on the bureaucracy of national conservation parks as seen from the perspective of an activist (the artist) involved with the conservation movement.

Subject and Association Description

The title of the art work is believed to be a reference to a quote by Bill Mumms, a sawmiller by trade and Buller County Council Chairman. The statement was "can't make an omelette without breaking eggs", which reflected his atttiude to conservationists and their attempts to protect areas of the West Coast bush from deforestation as a result of logging and mining.
