Subject and Association Description

Woollaston described his watercolour painting as "a rapid medium for striking quickly – while the iron is hot, so to speak – and so I like it best in summer, when what is put down dries at once and can take more, almost as fast as I can think" (Barnett, 1991, p.77).

The subject from this study overlaps with the work of the same year, Riwaka Wharf and White Heron, 1973. This large oil is now at the Auckland Art Gallery and represents a peak in Woollaston's career.

1973 was an important year for Woollaston. His retrospective, "M.T. Woollaston: Works/1933-1973" opened at the Manawatu Art Gallery under Luit Bieringa. This popular exhibition then toured the country throughout 1974.
