Subject and Association Description

1973 was an important year for Toss Woollaston. His retrospective, "M.T. Woollaston: Works/1933-1973" opened at the Manawatu Art Gallery under Luit Bieringa. This popular exhibition then toured the country throughout 1974.

Woollaston described his watercolour painting as "a rapid medium for striking quickly – while the iron is hot, so to speak – and so I like it best in summer, when what is put down dries at once and can take more, almost as fast as I can think" (Barnett, 1991, p.77).
