Decimus and his brother Arnold grew up in Taranaki before moving to Mapua to establish an apple orchard. The brothers and their families played an important part in Toss Woollaston's life. They employed him on multiple occasions, allowed him to build his cottage on their land and were friends and subjects for his work.
