Subject and Association Description

At the end of 1949 Toss Woollaston left Mapua for Greymouth to take up a new position as a Rawleigh's salesman, selling products door to door from his bicycle. By mid 1950 he had purchased a house in the town and his family had joined him.

Woollaston quickly began painting expeditions with other local artists who became very interested in the way he manipulated his subject matter. By the next Westland Art Society exhibition, Woollaston's influence on the local art scene quickly became apparent in developments in the work of local artists.
