Morning Mist; John GULLY; 1863; 142
Morning Mist
About this objectMenacing clouds look down on this lake scene where stark, rocky slopes drop down to the waters edge and snow capped mountains rise in the background. This scene has been identified as Lake Rotoiti and the composition has similarities to other paintings known to be of that location. (acc#: 31 and 341) However, the height of the peak at left (which would be Peanter Peak in the St Arnaud Range) is greatly exaggerated.

Subject and Association DescriptionJohn Sidney Gully (1984) suggests that this scene is possibly Lake Rotoiti looking south, though this is widely disputed by those who know the area.
