A late summer storm gathers over the Riwaka Hills foregrounded by a recently cleared hillside which still bears the scars of tree stumps and rocks. The bush continues on the right while on the left fence lines are beginning to show the land's transformation.

"Riwaka" was also painted during March 1888.

In April John Gully's health began to deteriorate and he died later that year on 1 November 1888.
