About this object
Reopening of the well at Shamrock Cottage 1968.
Sequence of photos of this event is in the Folder 14000 in the archive.
A plate in the Folder reads: "The well was then cleaned out, which yielded many broken pails, lanterns, bottles, a cruet set, a watch and a bracelet. The well is about 40 feet deep and below ground level are the original bricks. Originally water was drawn using a bucket, but later a hand pump was installed. It may have been the first well in Howick. The bottom is cut into about 6 feet of the sandstone strata, below the brick section."
