Shamrock Cottage well.
About this objectPeople watching as the lid of the well behind Shamrock Cottage is being propped open. The well was cleaned out, which yielded many broken pails, latterns, bottles, a cruet set, a watch and bracelet. The well is about 40 feet deep and below ground level are the orioginal bricks. originally water as drawn using a bucket, but later a hand pump was installed. It may have been the first well in Howick. the bottom is cut into about 6 feet of the sandstone strata, below the bricked section.
