Hairy Maclary, that famous little black dog, was born in Lower Hutt. In 1979, while living here, Dame Lynley Dodd made a small sketch of a rather unkempt-looking dog and penned a few words underneath.

Hairy Maclary comes home in an exhibition of his creator’s work, Lynley Dodd: A Retrospective, opening at The Dowse on Saturday 21 July and running until Sunday 28 October.
Find out more about the exhibition at The Dowse’s website.
Hear Lynley Dodd talk about the show and her creations on Good Morning.
