This Bedford was number one of three purchased by the Invercargill City Council (ICC) in 1946. It was possibly driven by Mr McKenzie. The buses mainly serviced the areas not accessible by the trams. Their original colour scheme was cream with a green flash down the sides. The colours were changed to red and grey when the city purchased the Daimler buses from the Wellington City Council in the early 1950s, (when the Invercargill trams ceased operating).
The Bedford was sold to Mr McTaggert of Tapanui in April 1958. He used it as a school bus to service the Heriot School from the Moa Flat area. However, due to the steep country, heavy snow in the winter and lack of clearance in the body to be able to fit snow chains, it proved to be unsuitable. It was sold in August 1958 to Allan 'Pop' Calder of Woodlands.
The Calders used it as a school bus for the Woodlands School until approximately 1982, by which time it had travelled 614,688 miles, (all most 990,000 kilometers). Allan Calder drove "Old Smilie" (as it was affectionately known) every school day except for when he broke his leg in December 1992. The war time grill was replaced with a 1953 grill with larger headlights sometime before 1986.
It was then given to Jim Boaden from Oamaru, and he used it to take tours around the penguin colony and the old part of Oamaru.
Tony Baas of Passenger Transport Ltd purchased it and started to restore it, but when they purchased City Bus in Dunedin they didn't have the time to finish it so they enquired if we would be interested in it. They donated it to us in 2011 and we have given it a make over and repainted it in its original colour scheme. It joined the Museum fleet in April 2012.
Although we don't have any history of Lamonds Motors of Invercargill owning the Bedford, we did find their name on it when sanding it back for repainting. Maybe that is another story?
