About this object
A black and white team portrait of the Mataura Association Football Team, 1938. They won the Mangan Cup, were joint winners of the Charity Cup and runners-up in the McDonald Cup. The Club had a brief life from 1935 to 1940 when World War Two brought it to a halt. The Club's home games were played on the town's hockey field and occurred when the hockey players had away games. Most games were played in Invercargill, where there were 5 teams. Transport was provided by Archie Meikle, a Mataura carrier. Annual matches were played with northern Dunedin on a reciprocal basis. Post-war soccer was confined to scratch teams raised by the New Zealand Paper Mills Social Club.
