About this object
A black and white photograph taken in Mataura of members of both the Mataura Paper Mill Eastern Southland Club and the Gore Soccer Wanderers, 1951. According to accounts in the book 'Mataura: City of the Falls' it was a struggle to get a wide amount of interest locally for the game. Before World War Two the Mataura Association Football Club had some good wins, but after the war it became more difficult to get members and scratch teams were raised by the Paper Mill Employees Social Club. This may have been because of the number of the Mills employees who had emigrated from the UK where soccer was a popular pastime. If members wanted to play at club level they had to go to Gore.
