About this object
A black and white photograph of the Mataura Bowling Club's 1935-1936, men's team, The Club was formed in 1905. Its greens and clubrooms are in Oakland Street (formerly Back Street). In 1906 a well was dug and a windmill installed on-site to enable the Club to water its greens effectively. They also used a one-of-a-kind tool made locally by W. Gardiner to tend the green, namely a heavy iron split roller with brass bushes. During the big 1978 flood the club was lucky as the flood water came to within an inch of the pavilion floor.
