Bag, Kit [World War One]
About this object
Bag, Kit. This canvas kit bag dates from World War One and was issued to Private Thomas Piercy of Tuturau. Thomas was a 20 year old farm worker when he enlisted at Wyndham in September 1916.

As a member of the Otago Infantry Battalion, D Company, Thomas saw active duty in France from May to September 1917 but contracted pleurisy leading to his hospitalisation and medical discharge. He embarked back to New Zealand in February 1918. After the war, Thomas lived in Carlyle Street, Mataura and worked at the Mataura Paper Mill. He was also a long serving member of the Mataura Lodge. Thomas died in Timaru in 1983.

The kit bag was donated to us by Mrs Patty Apeldoorn who purchased Mr Piercy's house in Mataura in 1979 and found this kit bag in the garage roof. After finding the bag she asked Mr Piercy if he wanted it back. His answer was no because 'he wasn't going back to war again!'
