About this object
Scout hat; this felt hat belonged to Ian McKelvie who had a 48 year involvement with the Mataura scout group. He joined in 1937 and retired in 1985 during which time he served in a range of roles through to Commissioner for the Lower Mataura District.

The hat badge is the 1920-1939 version of the Scout emblem. Notches on the hat band record Ian's attendance at camps and jamborees at Tatum Park, One Tree Hill in Auckland, Dunedin and Tuturau. We have a photograph album recording Ian's scouting activities between 1947 and 1951; the reference is MT2012.2, if you would like to have a look.
