About this object
Bag; a blue draw-string cloth bag, with St. John/Red Cross patch sewn on front. The National Office of New Zealand Red Cross tell us it is from a parcel sent to sick and wounded soldiers during World War Two. At the time New Zealand Red Cross and the Order of St John worked together as a Joint Council. At Christmas a special effort was made to see that every man in hospital or convalescent home received what was termed a 'Christmas Stocking'.

A total of 14,680 stockings were made and they usually contained a pocket wallet of leather, cigarettes or cigarette tobacco, tissue papers, toothpaste, shaving soap, mirror, razor blades, chocolate, handkerchiefs, socks and reading material.
