About this object
Whao; Pounamu chisel. This greenstone whao was found on William Weatherburn farm, 1 km south of Mataura in the 1900s. It is listed with the Southland Museum.

Stone tool specialist, Russell Beck assessed the whao in March 2015 and advised that the pounamu is from a source in Westland. The whao has saw scarves on both sides and usage wear on the cutting edge. The stone also has a decided grain and feather fracturing.

Russell said the size was between a whao and a toki but he felt that whao was the more likely use.
