About this object
Wedding cake decoration from John Taylor and Margaret Jaffray's wedding in 1893. The decorations are stored in a glass dome display case from our Collection (MT1993.58).

John Taylor was a Scot who first came to New Zealand in 1876. He first owned an interest in a butchers shop in North East Valley, Dunedin where he met his wife. They married in Kensington, England. While in England, John remained in the butchery trade and opened a butcher's shop in Smithsfield Market. They returned to New Zealand in c1895, John's above experiences lead to him establishing a rabbit meat exporting business in Mataura in 1896.
