About this object
A small fired, unglazed, straight sided bowl with a Maori influenced relief design. The bowl has a deep plain flared base and is decorated around its body with stylised animal forms, probably a taniwha.

This is called a plate-stand in the notes and would have had a hand-thrown plate or bowl fixed to its base to make a comport or raised fruit bowl. This is why the design appears to be upside-down. The production of these items must have been very limited.
