About this object
Colour photograph showing Dorothy Thorpe’s ‘Monterrey’ pattern.
‘Monterrey’ was one of the patterns designed by Dorothy Thorpe specifically for the North American market. The jugs and cups had ball-shaped handles. It was one of several patterns launched in 1965 and had a hessian style background with a lacy textured pattern printed on top.

The production of Dorothy Thorpe’s range brought many challenges for Crown Lynn. Some of the patterns had a raised textured surface, which was a new concept. These were produced using what was known as ‘the granule technique’ whereby the pattern was stamped on the plate in glue to which glaze granules were added, after which it was re-fired.
